Performers share their art with students, seniors and residents through performances at schools, residential facilities and the Siuslaw Library. These events may take the form of a Master Class with the High School Symphonic Band, a “mini-concert” in the Bromley Room at the Library or a show for the residents of Spruce Point. A special tribute to local veterans was held during the 2016 season, in partnership with the Florence Elks Lodge, when Cantus performed at the Lodge Veterans Luncheon.
Living Voices is an award-winning, nationally recognized education theater company that brings history to life with live multimedia performances in the classroom. For the last 4 years, SEA has brought Living Voices to the Siuslaw Middle School as an enhancement to the 8th Grade Social Studies curriculum. In 2016 the program was expanded to the Siuslaw Elementary School with the support of grant funding through the Florence Elks Lodge. Living Voices will be back at the Siuslaw Schools in January 2018.
SEA prides itself on its contribution to the Florence community. A key part of its mission is bringing the performing arts to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the amazing talent brought here by the Coastal Concert Series. Rachel Pearson, the Outreach Coordinator for the Seacoast Board of Directors, facilitates organizing the events with a special eye towards bringing music to the Siuslaw Schools.
In 2016, SEA was proud to launch Harmony Bridges with the Siuslaw School Band Program. The Harmony Bridge Project is an instructional teaching program designed to link young students with senior citizens in the community. Students learn how to perform for small audiences through ensemble work, solo parts, showmanship and audience participation. The premier performance was at Shorewood Senior Living on the last day of the 2015 – 16 school year. The program will continue as part of the Band curriculum as SEA continues to support music in the Siuslaw Schools.
